In 1984, he founded the Amsterdam literary bookstore Perdu, which still exists today. In the 1990s, he worked and was the director of the De Balie Center for Culture and Politics in Amsterdam. Among other things, Chris helped found Press Now to support independent media in the Balkans. For many years he was a member of the board of Asquith, a refugee support center. Chris Keulemans has published six books, as well as numerous articles on art and migration, music, cinema, military conflicts and their impact on culture in the most authoritative publications in Europe. To create a new book and explore the artistic processes after the crisis, he traveled to cities such as Beirut, Jakarta, Algeria, Pristina, Sarajevo, Tirana, New York, New Orleans and Ramallah, where he visited many independent cultural initiatives and interviewed local artists and activists.
